The UP Vargas Museum presents the exhibition “You Betrayed the Party Just When You Should Have Helped It” with support from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Republic of Croatia Ministry of Culture and Media. This contemporary art exhibition is the outcome of a long-term research and collaborative project by visual artist Andreja Kulunčić (Croatia) with curators Irena Bekić (Croatia) and Anca Mihuleţ (Romania).
The research project and exhibition are about the little-known women’s political prison on Goli Otok (Barren Island) islands and Sveti Grgur (Saint Gregory) in the Adriatic Sea in former Yugoslavia. It operated from 1950 to 1956 during the rule of Josip Broz Tito and the Yugoslav Communist Party.
The title “You Betrayed the Party Just When You Should Have Helped It” is from a speech delivered to new convicts by the camp commandant. Operating with scant official records, improper judiciary procedure, and ruthless punishments, the camps were a place of inhumane suffering and humiliation, which scarred many women long after they left.
