Twofold presents Garcellano’s two projects Dear Artist and Double Consciousness, exploring the relationships and intersections of cultural institutions, artistic production, and the art market. Both foreground the intricacies of valuation by examining the different networks, either public or private, with which an artist interacts. Garcellano opens a platform of critique for these legitimizing institutions while at the same time shows how an artist, through his or her engagement with the system, actually becomes a part of the very operational structure he or she critically mediates and through which artistic identity circulates. Dear Artist and Double Consciousness come together as one, revealing how artists situate and present themselves in the art world, the very institution that constitutes their worth.
