From the Earth

17 August – 09 September 2023

The UP Vargas Museum presents the exhibition From the Earth on view at the museum’s 1/F Landing. The exhibition is an outcome of a collaborative process between students of curatorship and ceramics from the Art Studies and Studio Arts departments of the University of the Philippines Diliman.

It features works by students of a ceramic sculpture class from the UP College of Fine Arts which showcases their study of different ceramic techniques for developing artistic ideas and craft. These ceramic sculptures allude to the materials and methods which brought figures and objects onto a material and tangible register. It focuses on exploring ceramic sculpture techniques, such as solid-block modeling, pinching, coiling, soft slab, and hard slab. They incorporate natural materials that undergo experimental approaches and processes, resulting in works highlighting the intricacies and transformations rendered possible by ceramic sculpture. It aimed to familiarize students with art production and curatorial methods, processes that entail creativity, conceptualization, and selection crucial to art production and exhibition making.

From the Earth is part of the Learning Lab series of the UP Vargas Museum, whereby the museum and its resources are activated as vital elements of teaching and learning modules across various disciplines in the University.
