UP Vargas Museum, with support from YOD Gallery, opens "By Sword and Fire", a solo exhibition by Renz Baluyot on 28 July at 6 in the evening. This exhibit showcases works by Renz Baluyot in conversation with memorabilia from the Vargas archives.

"By Sword and Fire" is a line borrowed from National Artist Nick Joaquin’s play “A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino.” Here, Baluyot, inspired by his artist residency in Japan, contemplates on the Second World War and the relationships formed through this history - between the Filipinos and the Japanese, the self and the past, the past and the present. Using diverse media from multiple timeframes, he intervenes in this history and forms conversations between them to create his works. Rust, a convening element in many of his works, pertains to a past that was hinged upon destruction and a present that is decaying and deteriorating.

Renz Baluyot (b. 1989) finished his Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Painting at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. "By Sword and Fire" is his sixth solo exhibition and he has participated in exhibitions in galleries and museums across the country. In 2016, he went to Osaka, Japan for an artist residency with YOD Gallery. He was also a finalist in the 41st Shell National Students Art Competition in 2008.

"By Sword and Fire" runs until August 26.
